The Meditation

Times are scary. Unpredictable and stifling with a dose of terror. Many people are turning to different types of self care to offset the negativity.

Like meditation, for example.

Personally, meditation hasn’t ever worked for me. My brain hasn’t figured out how to shut up.

Instead it bounces with incessant chatter:

“Did I water the plants yesterday? I think so. But wait. Did I? Hmm. Mental note to check later.”

“I think we might need more Nespresso. I should hit up the shop on my way home tomorrow.”

“I like cats. Cats are cute.”

“That’s it. I spend too much time looking at a screen and this is going to change now! I’m going to read an hour a day. No phone. No television. Just me with a book. And a cup of tea. Oh, and maybe something sweet. Which book should I read next?”

“Does the guy downstairs ever shut up? Don’t stomp on the floor, Marla. Don’t do it. You don’t want to get a reputation for being that grouchy neighbour.”

It goes on and on, interspersed with me telling myself off for not being able to meditate.

Which only adds to my anxiety. Naturally.

But while I’ve not mastered the art of meditation, I do have a photo of a sculpture called The Meditation. That’s kind of the same thing, right?

During our visit to Les Jardins d’Etretat we spotted this guy.

Equal parts adorable and grotesque, The Meditation was created by sculptor Dashi Namdakov.

Dashinima (known as Dashi) Balzhanovich Namdakov is a Russian sculptor. He’s also a member of the Russian Union of Artists. In a garden filled with funny faces and a musical tree, I think this guy fit in perfectly.

If you happen to visit the garden, let me know if he’s still there. I couldn’t find a lot of information on him but get the feeling he may have been part of a temporary exhibition.

Bonne journée!
